Be Inspired

Inspiration and The Arts

Even if definitions are near impossible, most artists have admitted that they require the aid of inspiration to accomplish their work. Etienne Gibson in Choir of Muses tells how music composer Sibelius describes an inspired experience:

"When the final shape of our work depends on forces more powerful than ourselves, we can later give reasons for this passage or that, but taking it as a whole one is merely an instrument. The power driving us is that marvelous logic which governs a work of art. Let us call it God."

Such a powerful statement.  We can sense the governing forces that Sibelius is describing. Marvelous logic. God.  There is something miraculous, rational and yet un-rational taking place.

Is man alone in his creative endeavors?  The Greeks thought that there are those who transmit inspirations from the higher worlds and open windows in our consciousness to make us see beyond our mundane life. These helpers are called, in the ancient world, Muses. They are messengers of inspiration. They build communication lines over the cleavages of our mental and emotional bodies.
